PAY ATTENTION : GM08

A showcase of Twin Cities art.

Capsule review: A showcase of Twin Cities art. This opening at the Soap Factory is going to be so laden with obscure art-world antecedents, you may need a crib sheet to keep up with all the gallery banter. Here’s a quick primer: The title, “Pay Attention: GM 08,” is a reference to (1) Gordon Matta-Clark, the 1970s “Anarchitect” revered for his building disembowelments and (2) an obscene message, written in backward capital letters, from a 1972 Bruce Nauman print. Oh, and the exhibition is modeled after the emerging local artists surveys of MOMA’s P.S. 1. Got it? Neither do we. But no worries; the wealth of local talent more than makes up for the show’s pretentious premise. Kristine Heykants, a photojournalist turned McKnight fellow, treats us to more of her “Media Roles” series — eerily orchestrated portraits that straddle the line between glamour shots and catalog ads. Other standouts include Drew Peterson, Eric William Carol and the husband-and-wife team called Tectonic Industries.
